Access hatch, a micro-sized door for your roof

Whether a multi-unit commercial building or a house, it can be equipped with an access hatch. Architects, when designing the building plan, include access hatches for safety and functionality. At the time of the construction also, workers need access to the roofs for several reasons. After the construction too, access hatches facilitate easy access for repairs and maintenance and even an emergency exit.

What is a ceiling hatch?

It is a door installed on the ceiling to allow access to the roof. It consists of two parts: an up-stand and the cover. The up-stand is installed on the roof, while the cover is used for closing the up-stand.

Purpose of installing an access hatch

  • In non-residential buildings like hospitals, installing a ceiling hatch allows easy access to the rooftop for maintenance, cleaning, and repairs. For example, it could be used for carrying out maintenance of the air conditioning units, etc.
  •  Ceiling hatches are made with insulating material. Thus they reduce the risk of fire and prevent it from spreading.
  • In residential buildings, a ceiling hatch allows the sunlight to enter the room. It can help save energy bills.
  • Large apparatus can be easily installed on the roof if there is no space within the rooms. They can also block outside noises.
  • Things to consider while buying an access hatch
  • Ease of installation: While purchasing either a ceiling hatch or a wall hatch, it is vital to consider whether the hatches have a pre-assembled robust structure or not. This form of hatches is easier to install.
  • Electric or manual: Yes, access hatches are available in two forms, one that can be operated manually and the other that can be operated electronically. However, the electronic ones are a bit costlier than the manual but easy to open.
  • Durability: Check the material of the hatch; the stronger ones are more durable as they have a long life.

So, consider these points while purchasing an access hatch for your building or home.

Why Should Access Hatches Be Used?

In homes and buildings, spaces between floors, drywall, and ceilings are generally not bare. Utilities like communication lines, electrical wires, and plumbing pass through such spaces. But having them sealed off is not practical as there can be situations when repairs, maintenance, or inspections are needed, and removing whole sections of the wall or ceiling would be rather expensive and inconvenient, to say the least.  The practical solution is to have access panels or access hatches placed during certain stages of construction in specific areas. The panels or hatches act as a means to acquire easy access to vital system points whenever there is a need to do so. Aside from simply being a point of access, they also have several other uses. Reasons to Use Access Panels in Your Projects

Renovators and contractors use access panels as a solution of functionality, visual appeal and versatility. Residential, commercial and industrial segments use access panels, which expands the space for functionality. In the earlier days, wood and linen were commonly used. They are replaced by plastic, aluminium and steel panels, which depends on the goal and purpose. Access panels are created to secure personal welfare and people’s belongings on the site. Today, they have moved beyond security to storage, sound insulation and pipes and wiring. They maximise the limited office space, along with adding functionality to confined areas. Ceilings, floors and walls offer functionality and versatility in products in the roofing market. Drywall access panels installed double up as a storage space and crawl, without taking up room. If you have an office that shares its wall with a neighbouring business, insulated access panel installation prevents sound transference from place to place. Ceili...
